How to Apply

The Penn State College of Communications offers three graduate degree programs.

• Ph.D. in Mass Communications (MASSC)
• M.A. in Media Studies (MEDIA)
• M.A. in Telecommunications Studies (TELEC)

To apply to any of these degree programs, please complete the electronic application form http://gradsch.psu.edu/portal/ at the Graduate School Admissions and Information Portal. Information on fees and the application process is available at http://gradsch.psu.edu/prospective/apply.html

(Please note:  If you are applying to one of the degree programs in the College of Communications, please enter the appropriate program above on your online application form. Penn State also offers graduate degrees in Communication Arts and Sciences in the College of the Liberal Arts, which emphasize rhetoric, public address, interpersonal communication, and group and organizational communication.)

The Graduate School online application will ask you to upload the following additional program-specific material:

• Statement of purpose (two to three pages explaining your academic interest and background in communications and how graduate study at Penn State fits into your career plans)
• Writing sample (any academic or professional work that demonstrates your analytical and writing abilities)
• Three (3) letters of recommendation (preferably from those who can assess your past academic performance and potential for graduate studies)

Further, hard copies of the following materials must be sent directly to the College of Communications, Graduate Office, 201 Carnegie Bldg, University Park, PA 16802:

• Two (2) official copies of transcripts from each university attended (international transcripts must be accompanied by a certified English copy)
• Official GRE Scores (analytical writing, verbal general and quantitative general) University code:  2660, Department code:  4502
• Official TOEFL Scores (for international students only).

Application for Funding

The College of Communications offers a limited number of Graduate Assistantships, University Graduate Fellowships, and scholarships. If you wish to be considered for such funding, please indicate this in the program-specific section at the end of the online Graduate School applications, No additional applications for funding is required.
