Biography:

Denise Bortree teaches public relations campaigns and research in advertising/public relations.

Before joining the faculty at Penn State, Bortree taught a number of classes at the University of Florida including public relations campaigns, public relations writing, media literacy and online journalism.

She brings more than 10 years of corporate experience to her teaching including roles of manager of public relations for Modis Professional Services and marketing manager and manager of communications for Alltel Communications in Jacksonville, Fla., where she managed advertising campaigns, public relations campaigns, community relations, media relations, sports marketing and special events activities.

Bortree received the prestigious J. Hillis Miller Presidential Fellowship, a four-year fellowship from the University of Florida, given annually to one entering doctoral student. During her time at Florida, she earned a master's degree in mass communication, a master's of education in educational psychology and a Ph.D. in mass communication.

Bortree's research interests include relationship management, online communication and children and media. She has three articles published or accepted for publication in the Journal of Applied Communications, the International Journal of Volunteer Administration and Education, Communication and Information, as well as a number of book chapters. She has presented a dozen papers at various conferences including the International Communication Association, Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication and the National Communication Association.
