Biography

Doctoral student Azeta Hatef earned her B.A. in media studies from UC Berkeley. She completed her M.A. also in media studies and a certificate in advanced study in women and gender studies at Syracuse University. For her master’s thesis, Azeta traveled to Afghanistan to examine the cosmetic surgery industry in the country. This project explored the post-occupation media landscape and beauty industry of Afghanistan during a time of social and political change. Her research has been presented at number of communications conferences including, the International Communication Association, International Association for Media and Communication Research, Union for Democratic Communications, Global Fusion, Popular Communication Association, and the Association for Education Mass Communication and Journalism.

Azeta’s commitment to research in the area of international human rights through ethnographic inquiry is the focus of her dissertation, where she examines the democratizing effects of social media among the Roma community in the Czech Republic. Her dissertation focuses on analysis of online spaces for the development and support of organization, community, and engagement for marginalized groups.
